Ocean Park Branch library, an original Carnegie library. In December 1916, the commissioners of Santa Monica selected the site for the Ocean Park branch Carnegie library at 2601 Main Street. [6] The library was funded by a $12,500 grant from the Carnegie Corporation. The library was completed on February 15, 1918 when it was opened to the public.

Santa Monica's library history dates from 1876 and its Carnegie funded Main Library was completed in 1904. That building was demolished in 1974. But by 1906 Ocean Park, in the southern area of Santa Monica, was developing into an area of vacation amusement activities with pier, bathhouses, golf course and race track, and a small book exchange branch was established there.
